China Workshops

Just recently we’ve been really fortunate to start work with Walton-le-Dale Hgh School in Preston on a project they are working on in school all about China. As part of this we delivered our workshops developed alongside the China: Journey to the East exhibition from the British Museum. Walton-Le-Dale were able to bring the majority of their Year 8 cohort to take part in both Exploring China and Made in China across two days and here at the Museum we delivered each workshop four times!
It was a hectic couple of days, but appeared to be successful and fun, allowing students to explore their existing knowledge whilst also adding to their skills and exploration of the topic . I’ve added some photographs we took on the day – both of the displays they created in Exploring China, and the shadow puppets crafted in Made in China.
We’ll be offering both these two engaging sessions in the summer term until the exhibition closes here at The Manchester Museum on 26th June 2011. Enjoy!
On Wednesday 29th September The Manchester Museum hosted a preview evening for teachers in order to allow educational professsionals to see the new China: Journey to the East exhibition, view our ideas for the associated learning programme and talk to the learning team at the Musuem.
It was a fantastic evening, and seemed to be a great success. We had over fifty teachers attend to explore and investigate the variety of programming that The Museum is offering in conjunciton to the exhibition and it was amazing to be able to get input and feedback for the workshops and sessions at such an early stage.
Throughout the school year, as the exhibition is with us until June 2011, we are offering workshops and resources at all stages, from Early Years to Post-16. As Cat mentioned in her last post, the start of the academic year brings a new and exciting exhibition to The Manchester Museum. CHINA: JOURNEY TO THE EAST, a British Museum Touring Exhibition, opens in the Museum on 25 September 2010. The exhibition will be accompanied by a varied and stimulating learning programme, which ranges from Early Years to Post 16.
On Wednesday 29 September 2010 from 5.30-7.30pm, the Learning Team will be hosting a special after hours event for teachers. This event will offer teachers at all key stages a chance to see the learning opportunities available for your students accompanying the exhibition. You will be able to preview the new exhibition with Curators and members of the Learning Team will be on hand to answer your questions. Of course, there will also be the all important refreshments!

Come and see the new exhibition at The Manchester Museum
The new term is finally here, and the opening of the China: Journey to the East exhibition is fast approaching. I’m really excited about this exhibition and the associated programming we have for the Secondary cohort.
We will be offering a brand new KS3/4 workshop that will encourage students to explore in detail the links between ancient and modern China and involve students in issues around interpretation of past and present. This two-hour session will be a practical exercise in displaying objects and information and a facilitated visit to the China: Journey to the East exhibition will be included as inspiration to student’s creativity. There will be a variety of resources to investigate, question and use, including objects from our Museum collection to stimulate links between ancient and modern China.
For self-guided groups we will also be providing Resources Boxes developed by Levenshulme High School students to help explore some of the themes in the exhibition and hopefully kick-start some creative and critical thinking about how ancient China relates to modern Britain.

This project was generously funded by AimHigher and allowed the Museum to work with the students to explore some of their own ideas about ancient and modern China and how they would link this to the exhibition. The boxes are almost complete, and we will have one final visit by the students just before the exhibition opening on the 25th September. In the boxes will be objects that will help to instigate discussion and thinking about China, in addition to the students own interpretation and questions that they believe are important to consider about the exhibition’s themes.

On Thursday 20th May Louise, Stephen Welsh (our Curator of Living Cultures) and I went to Levenshulme High School in order to meet with Alice Tasker, art teacher extraordinaire. We have agreed to collaborate on some student-led learning around our upcoming China: Journey to the East exhibition – opening 25th Sept 2010.
The basic idea is to work with a small group of Year 9 students who were lucky enough to visit China recently and spend some time at a school in Beijing. Their experience, knowledge and interpretation of China and the links to Manchester and their own lives can be explored through the project, which is kindly being funded by AimHigher.
Currently, we haven’t got a plan for the exact output of the project – as we would like this to be decided by the students themselves – however we’re hoping they might like to design some resources for other KS3 users to explore while in the exhibition. The only set part of the programme is a visit to York Art Gallery to see the exhibition in situ there, and allow the students a sneaky preview of the British Museum objects which will be installed at The Manchester Museum in the autumn term.
It’s going to be an excellent project, albeit a whirlwind of a programme given as we need to complete the activity by the end of this term! However, we intend collaborate with Levenshulme throughout the time the exhibition is here and work with them in order to create a sustainable and long-term relationship between the school and the Museum so that future students can benefit from the legacy of Levenshulme’s involvement in this project.

‘China: Journey to the East’ a touring exhibition from the British Museum will be opening at The Manchester Museum on September 25th.
In Primary Outreach we have been busy delving through the Museum’s collections to find fascinating and intriguing artefacts for our forthcoming outreach workshop that will be launched in the Autumn.
We aim to have handling artefacts to support the exhibition’s themes of play and performance, technology, belief and festivals, food and drink, and language and writing.
In the stores we were surrounded by examples of intricate craftsmanship and samples of exquisite silk. Amongst the artefacts which we may include in the workshop are an abacus, a bronze mirror and metal zodiac calendar.
