Winning younger audiences – what strategy?

I often wonder whether the children and young people who visit the Manchester Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery as part of school groups are inspired to return on their own or with families. I’ve certainly spotted (and been greeted by the occasional returnee). As a longer term aim, how do museums and galleries make sure they continue to engage with young people and help them to develop a lifelong (hopefully!) interest in cultural venues such as ours?

I recently read this interesting article which posited that attempting to please ‘traditional’ and ‘new’ audiences isn’t always possible through the same approaches and that perhaps we have to develop different strategies. I wonder what you think.
