In September 2015, Manchester Museum launches an exciting new space The Study – for the curious, the makers, the searchers and the sharers. The Study aims to inspire researchers of all ages, from curious teenagers to amateur enthusiasts. We are looking for people with a passion – it can be anything (within reason) from geology or botany to comics or knitting – to volunteer in this beautiful new thinking space.

Through this unique volunteer opportunity we invite you to research and share your passion, while empowering our visitors to be curious and take their own interests further using real Museums objects and bespoke activities and resources.

Manchester Museum Volunteer Opportunity

At Manchester Museum, we are creating an exciting new space ‘The Study’ which aims to inspire researchers of all ages, from curious teenagers to amateur enthusiasts. We are looking for University student volunteers to collaborate with staff on the development of a new volunteer role to support this space, help shape our student launch event in September and advise us as we finalise our plans for the gallery and recruit a core team of student volunteers who will inspire visitors in this unique learning environment.

Overview of role:

  • Advise staff on subject matter, content and marketing/branding for ‘The Study’
  • Collaborate with Museum staff on the development of new volunteer role
  • Help shape and plan our student launch event in September
  • Draw on knowledge, interests and skills to offer staff an insight into student life which will

inform the way we engage with students

  • Assist with the promotion of opportunities and events to fellow students

Opportunities as a volunteer:

  • Be involved in a unique opportunity to play a critical role in shaping a permanent Museum

space

  • Collaborate with staff from across the Museum’s departments
  • Gain insight into learning, exhibitions and programming in museums
  • Meet new people and develop a range of skills including communication and team work
  • To become part of the highly valued Museum Volunteer team with opportunities to attend

further training and development, and to attend social events and private views

What we would like you to bring to ‘The Study’:

We would like volunteers to commit to 2 hours every fortnight over the summer period, with the opportunity for a regular volunteer session in ‘The Study’ from September onwards

New school year – thinking about a trip?

Somewhat unbelievably (at least we think so – the year is flying by!), it’s September and the start of another school year. We’ve been gearing up to the 2013-14 academic year with a refurbishment and refreshment of our school programme from Early Years to Post 16 and a new look to the Learning Pages on Manchester Museuslothm website: http://www.manchester.ac.uk/museum/learning . You’ll still find many of the ever popular sessions like Egyptian Worlds (KS2), Dinosaur Detectives (KS2), Forensic Science: A Bog Body Mystery (KS3/4 Science) and Citizen of the City (KS3 Citizenship) but also a few new ones and some like Dinosaur Challenge for KS1 pupils that are coming soon.

Do take a look and let us know what you think. If you are starting your planning for the year ahead then take a look at the website and see what takes your fancy for you and your class. If you need more information on anything then either email us at school.bookings@manchester.ac.uk or give us a call on 0161 275 2630 – we start taking bookings on 5th September.

We’re really looking forward to a jam packed year of school visits (there’s nothing we like more) and to seeing many of you and your classes in the Museum. That’s the programme spruced up – now just the office to go!

Evaluation Consultant Needed for HLF Funded Ancient Worlds Galleries

8158058348_5b8802721f 8157991179_5ea633f483 Ancient Worlds GalleriesManchester Museum is seeking an Evaluation Consultant to devise and implement a robust evaluation strategy to measure the impact of the Museum’s recent Ancient Worlds Galleries redevelopment. Ancient Worlds transformed the displays in three of the Museum’s galleries which are dedicated to archaeology and ancient Egypt. Opened in October 2012, at a cost of c. £1.5 million, the project has been funded with the support of several key external funders, including a significant grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

We now require an evaluation expert to assist us in assessing the extent to which we have met our original objectives for the redevelopment and in measuring the impact of the project upon the Museum’s diverse audiences. In addition to focusing upon the new galleries themselves, the evaluation process will also encompass the associated Activity Plan of events (public programmes, learning sessions, community engagement initiatives, etc.) which have taken place in these spaces since they reopened.

The successful applicant would be required to start around w/c 14th October 2013 and the full external evaluation report would need to be produced and submitted to the Museum by 16th December 2013.

‘The tip of the educational iceberg’…amazing choir performance at Manchester Museum

choir picWe were amazingly privileged here at the Museum to play host to the fantastic ‘School Network Choir’ today. In the glorious Manchester sun, pupils from Oswald Road, Crab Lane, Birchfields and Barlow Hall schools sang a series of songs from around the world in the galleries and the Museum allotment, inspired by the collections in the Museum and the Whitworth Art Gallery. They sang beautifully, with passion and clear enjoyment. It was a wonderful sight to see and attracted staff, visitors and passers by alike. As described by their conductor, the actual performance is just the ‘tip of the educational iceberg’ – to prepare for this the pupils spent months researching Victorian and modern day Manchester, the Museum and its collection and learning about the history of the songs they were singing – and you could tell that they understood and had learnt so much more than just the words.

Here at the Museum we are always passionate about the collection and how inspiring it can be for creative work but it is always good to be reminded by brilliant projects and groups what wonderful and unexpected learning journeys objects can take you on. The performance today was an excellent reminder as to how great creativity can stem from experiences and sources outside the classroom and be used to stimulate classroom learning and enthusiasm for a subject.

Thank you to all schools involved today – we very much appreciated your efforts and the hard work you put it to your performances! And we very much hope to welcome you back in the future.

Be a climate researcher – Citizen Science – Make a rain gauge!

Here at the Manchester Museum we absolutely love projects that get pupils involved in real life science that matters – they are, after all, the researchers of tomorrow.

How much rain falls in Manchester?

So we were really pleased to get information on the ‘Crowdsourcing4Climate: Community Rainfalls Collections’ pilot project, which hopes to get the public and schools collecting rainfall data to add to the data we can use in all sorts of scientific research. It’s simple but could be a brilliant and effective school project and will support research at Manchester, Birmingham and Leicester Universities.

Freelance work opportunity – Magic Carpet

Hi Everyone,

An exciting freelance opportunity has arisen at Manchester Museum to develop and facilitMagic Carpet 7ate part of the Museum’s ‘Magic Carpet’ programme for under 5’s and their parents and carers. A total of six themed and resourced sessions will be developed and delivered twice throughout the year. We are looking to recruit a group of practitioners who will be asked to develop up to a minimum of two sessions each and deliver each session twice in the first year (July 2013 – June 2014).

We are looking for creative practitioners who have experience of delivering engagement programmes for children aged 0-5 years and their families in a museum, gallery or cultural venue and who have specialist practice in drama/storytelling, art practice, music, singing or dance and movement.

Intrepid school restore Dino Egg to Museum

Recently Boothstown Methodist Primary school came to the Museum on a visit and brought with them a very valuable find!

They presented to us a T.rex egg, over 65 million years old, that was originally from the USA. According to the pupils the egg had mysteriously dropped from the sky and landed in their classroom.

However, using their skills of deduction they were able to reason that the egg had most likely fallen from an overhead plane on its way to Manchester so that it could be safely deposited in our collection.

Therefore, they kept it safe and returned it to us in perfect condition. Our thanks goes out to the school for rescuing this very important find and delivering it to our door!

How to Build a Museum in your Classroom

It’s always fantastic to hear that the Museum and its displays have provided inspiration for pupils in their classrooms – the range of things produced is always varied and creative and we really enjoy hearing about them. However, when Irlam Endowed Primary School contacted us, we couldn’t have imagined just how inspired they had been by their recent trip to the Museum!

On Friday 20th April, Debbie anImaged David from the Museum Learning Team were delighted to join Year 4 pupils and class teacher Tracey Whittaker at the school, to open their very own museum in their classroom. They were enthralled by the accuracy and amount of effort that had gone into everything, from the design of displays to accurate labels and the pièce de résistance of a 5.5m long replica whale skeleton hanging from the ceiling – just like in our Living Worlds gallery!

It was a real honour for the Museum to be part of the school’s celebrations and to join them in their own museum. So thanks very much to Irlam Endowed Primary School and please do let us know if the Museum has inspired you.

Teacher Preview – CHINA: JOURNEY TO THE EAST

As Cat mentioned in her last post, the start of the academic year brings a new and exciting exhibition to The Manchester Museum. CHINA: JOURNEY TO THE EAST, a British Museum Touring Exhibition, opens in the Museum on 25 September 2010. The exhibition will be accompanied by a varied and stimulating learning programme, which ranges from Early Years to Post 16.

On Wednesday 29 September 2010 from 5.30-7.30pm, the Learning Team will be hosting a special after hours event for teachers. This event will offer teachers at all key stages a chance to see the learning opportunities available for your students accompanying the exhibition. You will be able to preview the new exhibition with Curators and members of the Learning Team will be on hand to answer your questions.  Of course, there will also be the all important refreshments!
